Mission and objectives

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was established by Security Council resolution 2100 of 25 April 2013 to support political processes in the country and to carry out a number of security-related tasks. The Mission has been asked to support the transitional authorities of Mali in the stabilization of the country and implementation of the transitional roadmap, focusing on major population centers and lines of communication, protecting civilians, human rights monitoring, the creation of conditions for the provision of humanitarian assistance and the return of displaced persons, the extension of State authority and the preparation of free, inclusive and peaceful elections. Task description

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Medical Officer and the direct supervision of the Head Nurse/Head of clinical duties or Unit where s/he will be deployed, the UN Volunteer will have the responsibility to:

  • Work in the walk-in clinic & the nursing facility.
  • Respond to emergency calls and assist doctors in providing adequate care and performing respective duties in the treatment of the patient.
  • Performing medical briefing for incoming staff.
  • Perform ECG, and other medical exam such as blood tests, glucose, troponin, and urine test as required.
  • Prepare patient for different intervention and escort patient to other medical facilities as required.
  • On call as required.
  • Perform nursing care and generally all activities related to her professional capacity.
  • Accords patients fair and equal treatment regardless of ethnic background
  • Assist in providing health education and addressing work environment and occupational health issues;
  • Designs and implements outreach programs for MINUSMA Civilian and Military Personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as required. Medico Administrative Duties:
  • Actively contribute in planning and organizing preventive and promotive medical fairs.

  • Actively contribute in the In-service education for nurses.
  • Responsible for the clinic pharmacy; keep the pharmacy database, ensure its integrity and advise Head Nurse on stock status.
  • Ensure that regional clinic has up-dated medical supplies.
  • Receive pharmaceutical from the medical logistics and Supply Unit and keep record
  • Keep the clinic & pharmacy statistic.
  • Update the medical monthly report.
  • Be responsible for coordination of CaseVac/ Medevac/repatriation from the region.
  • Under the supervision of Head Nurse/ Regional Medical Officer the UNV volunteer will be responsible for Provision of quality nursing services that contribute to the good physical and mental health of the staff of MINUSMA

  • Registered Nurse who is graduate with either an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Programme or and accredited Nursing Diploma Programme.
  • Certificates in ECG and CPR or Basic life support are an asset plus technical interview.

Other information

Living conditions and remarks

Gao is non-family duty station. Living conditions are acceptable, but security instructions need to be strictly complied with. The national currency is the Franc CFA (April 2020 exchange rate is 1 US$ = 545 FCFA). Visa credit cards are acceptable in some hotels and larges shops in Bamako. Mali is a country prone to malaria, so mosquito nets are highly recommended. Basic medicines are available from UN Medical Section or from pharmacies, but provision need to be made for specialized medication. Security recommendations from the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) must be followed by all UN Staff in the course of their assignments in Mali. Appropriate measures are in place to mitigate the current security risk for UN personnel in the country. All UN Volunteers, like all UN personnel, undergo a security briefing and the 3 days mandatory training “Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments” (SSAFE) upon arrival, where practical guidance and recommendations are provided regarding security threats in Mali. An additional security briefing is provided upon arrival to the final duty station. Like all UN personnel, UN Volunteers based in Gao are accommodated in UN premises. UN provided accommodation in Mali is compliant with wellbeing standards, i.e. female/male bathrooms. A welfare committee is also active in all duty stations to ensure enough access to welfare commodities, including food supplies. Emergency contacts (security, medical, staff counselling, UNV Office) are made available for all UN Volunteers upon arrival, and each individual is provided with a VHF radio and a call sign, which can be used at all time. For the sake of rewarding experience, UN Volunteers in MINUSMA carry out their duties with flexibility, commitment and a willingness to live and work in challenging conditions including heat and limited water and electricity supply.
