Internship opportunities at the ITER Organization

Task Title: INTERN-SCOP01-Time-dependent Scrape-Off Layer simulations with JOREK for detachment control Domain: Science & Operation Domain Department: Science, Controls & Operation Department Division: Not Applicable Section: Experiments & Plasma Operation Section Duration (in months): 4 months Location: France, 13067 St Paul Lez Durance Cedex Description of tasks:

This internship will analyse the output of time-dependent simulations of the plasma scrape-off-layer of ITER to assess its dynamics during plasma detachment. The results will then be used to improve and assess the synthetic diagnostic model of the divertor shunts for real-time control of the detachment state.

Task 1: Write a routine to extract the total poloidal scrape-off-layer current from JOREK simulations; Task 2: Analyse the behaviour of this current for progressively detaching diverter plasmas; Task 3: Contribute in the development of the system identification techniques to extract dynamic models relating to the impurity gas injection to the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) current; Task 4: Provide support in combining this dynamic model with the synthetic model for the divertor shunt diagnostic and assess their performance for control.

The ITER Organization offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students with the objective of providing these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study, whilst collaborating in an international, scientific and multicultural environment. Internships are offered for up to six months, extendable for up to one year (depending on the category). To find out more about our internship program, please refer to our website (click here)

For any further questions, please contact [email protected]

Internship opportunities are limited to nationals from countries participating in the ITER Project (China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russian Federation, and the United States).

Please also note that interns are not considered staff members and shall, therefore, not have the status of “Staff” as per the ITER Agreement and the Headquarters Agreement (see more information on these constitutive agreements in Legal Resources). Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns. The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
