Organisational Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Africa Section of the Communications Campaigns Service in the Strategic Communications Division, and is for a period of three (3) months with an opportunity for extension for an additional three (3) months depending on the needs of the department.
Through its Africa Renewal platforms, the Section is focused on providing solutions-oriented
content about Africa, taking advantage of the continent’s evolving digital communications
landscape for maximum reach, in line with the UN’s global communications strategy. We also
disseminate Africa and UN-related content for publication at no cost to hundreds of media
outlets around the world.
We provide external communications support to our designated clients, namely the UN Office
of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the African Union Development Agency (AUDANEPAD),
and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and collaborate with other
UN and external entities to advance a factual, balanced and non-stereotypical narrative of
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions the internship may be conducted remotely.
Duties may include the following: Assisting in advocacy and outreach activities to internal and external audiences, including youth and women’s groups, other civil society organisations in Africa and top African editors/journalists;
Identifying, researching, drafting content (text, photos, documents and multimedia) for online publication (website and social media);
Contributing to strategies for more effective audience engagement;
Proposing new projects for partnerships and identifying opportunities to reach a wider audience;
Assisting in monitoring the website and social media channel usage through the use of various statistical tools;
Assisting in media monitoring of coverage of Africa Renewal content, fact-checking, and related research work for Africa Renewal stories;
Maintaining and updating media and subscription mailing lists for the Section, and assisting in distributing various information products to key partners;
Performing additional tasks that may be assigned by the Chief of the Section from time to time.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- As per the provisions of ST/AI/2020/1, applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of
differing opinions and views.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is desirable.

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
