The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
This internship is located within UNEP’s Economy Division . The Division’s core mandate is to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a universally agreed objective—deriving from the Charter of the United Nations, which unequivocally reaffirmed the equal rights of men and women—and is confirmed in a number of commitments taken through, among others, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women of 1979, the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, various resolutions and decisions of the United Nations General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 5 (“To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”). Gender equality is the overarching and long-term development goal, to be achieved on the programmatic side through gender mainstreaming in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all policies and programmes, and in the United Nations Secretariat by aiming at achieving a 50/50 gender balance in staff at all levels.
In this context the UNEP Economy Division recognizes gender as an issue cutting across all aspects of its programmes and activities and is working to support the effective mainstreaming of gender within its work.
The Internship is for 2 to 6 months and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Under the direct supervision of the Economy Division Gender Coordinator the intern will assist in efforts to strengthen gender mainstreaming within the Economy Division. Activities will include:
- Assist with conducting research for the development of gender focused communications materials that highlight the intersections between gender and the various areas of work that the Economy Division focuses on.
- Assist the team in the development of capacity building webinars on gender mainstreaming as well as organizing and planning for the hosting of such webinars.
- Support the drafting and dissemination of a monthly gender mainstreaming newsletter to the Economy Division.
- Assist with other tasks, as required, that relate to strengthening gender mainstreaming within the Division.

Undertaking a degree programme in gender studies, communication, environmental studies, international relations, or related fields.
Be computer literate in standard software applications. Skills in graphic design an asset.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
