Internship opportunities at the ITER Organization

Task Title: INTERN-ENGN09-Internship on Development of synthetic X-ray spectroscopy diagnostics Domain: Engineering Domain Department: Engineering Design Department Division: Port Plugs & Diagnostics Division Section: Ex-Vessel Diagnostics Section Duration (in months): 6 Location: France, 13067 St Paul Lez Durance Cedex Description of tasks:

This internship will be focused on developing a module simulating x-ray spectroscopy raw and analysed data as expected to be retrieved from the action ITER x-ray spectroscopy diagnostics. An advanced synthetic diagnostic will be based on a model simulating both basic operating principles of the diagnostic as well as secondary physics that affect the diagnostic and all component properties (e.g. detector sensitivity, transmission …).

Task 1: Identifying and familiarizing oneself with the basic geometry, operating principles and components of the diagnostic; Task 2: Identifying and familiarizing oneself with the ITER Integrated Modelling and Analysis Suite (IMAS) and the Integrated Data Structure (IDS); Task 3: Assisting the development of a code module in python that reads plasma parameters from the IMAS database, simulates the raw diagnostic measurement in both physics and detector units (including the noise), performs some basic data analysis on the simulated raw data and saves the data in the appropriate IDS; Task 4: Test the simulation code module for multiple plasma scenarios to identify the signal levels, signal to noise ratios and data analysis performance for the ITER operating space.

The ITER Organization offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students with the objective of providing these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study, whilst collaborating in an international, scientific and multicultural environment. Internships are offered for up to six months, extendable for up to one year (depending on the category). To find out more about our internship program, please refer to our website (click here)

For any further questions, please contact [email protected]

Internship opportunities are limited to nationals from countries participating in the ITER Project (China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russian Federation, and the United States).

Please also note that interns are not considered staff members and shall, therefore, not have the status of “Staff” as per the ITER Agreement and the Headquarters Agreement (see more information on these constitutive agreements in Legal Resources). Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns. The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
