Health Senior Associate – Washington, DC

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative health young professional who will help us change people’s lives in Latin America and the Caribbean working on the design, supervision, implementation, and evaluation of policies, and operations to promote access to quality, equitable and sustainable health services to make progress towards universal health coverage.

  • Your work will be focused on the areas of maternal, child and adolescent health, nutrition, non-communicable and mental and neurological diseases, health system strengthening, health financing, health policies to improve quality of services –including continuous quality improvement, strategy formulation, and/or the digital transformation of the health sector.
  • Participate in the origination, design, and preparation of Bank operational, analytical, and strategic activities (including country strategies, analyses of country development challenges, loans, policy dialogues, events, and knowledge initiatives).
  • Participate in the supervision of the execution and the monitoring and evaluation of operations for which the IDB has approved financing.
  • Participate in applied research
  • Collaborate with and support the activities related to health of the IDB Invest and IDB Lab within the IDB Group.
  • Collaborate in the preparation of technical reports and analysis of sectoral information
  • Contribute to transfer technical and operational knowledge to entities in charge of the execution of IDB financed operations.
  • Support and participate in technical meetings and policy dialogue with Government authorities and development partners.
  • Disseminate economic/sector knowledge and learning tools to enhance the relevance of the IDB to borrowing countries and the region.
  • Engage with health specialists in other multilateral and bilateral institutions, academic institutions, think-tanks, NGOs, and professional bodies to promote collaborations.
  • Provide other support to the analytical and operational work agenda on health of the Division, as needed.

  • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB Group.
  • Education: You hold a Master’s level degree (PhD preferred but no required) in public health, epidemiology, applied economics, public policy, social policy, social welfare, sociology, or related subject areas, or a Medical degree and experience in health policy.
  • Experience: You have at least 4 years of relevant health policy, health systems strengthening, and project management or operational experience, including demonstrated experience conducting analysis of micro data from household surveys and censuses in statistical software is a plus.
  • Languages: You are proficient in Spanish and English. Portuguese and/or French knowledge are a plus.


  • Business Unit: Our Social Sector (SCL) is a multidisciplinary team convinced that investing in people is the way to improve lives and overcome the development challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean. Jointly with the countries in the region, the Social Sector formulates public policy solutions to reduce poverty and improve the delivery of education, work, social protection, and health services. Our objective is to advance a more productive region, with equal opportunities for people of all gender, and greater inclusion of the most vulnerable groups.
  • The Team: the Social Protection and Health Division (SPH) is tasked with the preparation and supervision of IDB operations in borrowing member countries in the areas of social protection (safety nets and transfers and services for social inclusion which include: early childhood development, youth programs, care services for dependency, among others), health (health capital investment strategies, health networks strengthening, health system financing, organization and performance, etc.) and nutrition. It also provides and mobilizes technical assistance and produce applied research to inform policies and improve lives.

Contract type and duration: International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
