The International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) is the global standard setting body for insurance supervision. Our mission is to promote effective and globally consistent supervision of the insurance industry for the benefit and protection of policyholders and to contribute to global financial stability.

We are inviting applications for the position of Head of Implementation and Assessment.

As part of the IAIS management, leading an international team of Senior Policy Advisors helping the IAIS achieve its mission, you will interact with IAIS Executive and Parent Committees as well as Members and key partners globally and supervise the work on core strategic projects and activities of the IAIS.

Job description

In this role, you will lead and manage members of the Secretariat, which involves setting objectives, empowering performance, mentoring team members as well as providing policy, technical and administrative support to the relevant IAIS Committees and Subcommittees. This position will also involve preparing papers and extensive communication with IAIS Members, partner organisations, stakeholders and the broader public.

The IAIS Head of Implementation and Assessment reports to the Secretary General.

The responsibilities of the role include the following:

  • Supporting the work of the IAIS’ Implementation and Assessment Committee (and its respective Subcommittees and Forums), as well as coordinating with other relevant IAIS Committees and Subcommittees, in the areas assessing and supporting implementation of IAIS standards.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with implementation partners in support of the IAIS’ implementation and assessment objectives.
  • Contributing to stakeholder engagement and communications, exercising senior stakeholder management skills.
  • Advancing the IAIS’ financial inclusion agenda.
  • Leading a team of Senior Policy Advisors and operational staff and supervising the project management of key activities, including the execution of programmes, briefing notes, memos and presentations within the Secretariat and for IAIS Committees and Subcommittees.
  • Managing key internal functions of the IAIS Secretariat, as assigned by the Secretary General, and ensuring that IAIS procedures and internal processes are followed.
  • Performing any other relevant work as assigned or delegated by the Secretary General.

Job requirements

The following are the core requirements for this role:

  • Extensive experience in insurance supervision and policy making.
  • Solid understanding of, and experience in, approaches to the assessment of implementation of supervisory standards and good practices.

  • Good knowledge of the supervisory and supporting material developed by the IAIS.
  • Significant leadership and management experience, ideally developed in a public institution.
  • Demonstrated independence, proactivity, diplomacy and the ability to build consensus amongst diverse members and partners.
  • Passion, drive and energy to achieve agreed objectives in a structured and transparent manner.
  • Proven capacity to work flexibly, effectively and harmoniously in a small team context to achieve the successful and timely delivery of project objectives over an extended timeline.
  • Ability to work constructively with colleagues from a wide variety of backgrounds and nationalities within the Secretariat and within the IAIS membership.
  • Higher education in subjects relevant to the work of the IAIS.
  • Excellent command of English language (written and spoken) and ability to communicate effectively both internally with team members and externally with insurance supervisors and representatives from national and other international organisations.
  • Dedication to work in Basel, ability to sustain regular travel.

Desirable experience including (but not limited to):

  • Understanding of effective supervisory practices to proactively respond to accelerating trends in the insurance sector, such as digital innovation, cyber risks and climate risk.
  • Understanding of technical assistance project design and delivery.
  • Skills in at least one of the other two official IAIS languages (French, Spanish) will be a plus.

What we offer

The position is based in Basel, Switzerland, and will involve international travel. We offer attractive employment conditions. The salary will be paid free of Swiss income tax. The contract term is for three years with the possibility of extension. A relocation package will be offered to the successful candidate.
