The Communications Department (COM) is the IMF’s center for strategic communication. It develops and coordinates implementation of the Fund’s external and internal communications strategy, shapes key messages, and advises Management and staff on communications and outreach.

The Immediate Office in the Communications Department defines and implements the overall strategy for the department, manages human resources and the budget, meets departmental business needs, and provides oversight of Immediate Office staff, divisions, and intra-departmental teams. It also leads interaction with Management and the Executive Board, and develops networks inside and outside the Fund.

Duties and Responsibilities: Working closely with the Director and staff of COM, Office of the Managing Director, and other IMF departments, the position’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting of speeches, speaking notes, op-eds, and other materials for the Managing Director, as well as for other members of the IMF’s senior leadership team, as needed, for communication to influential audiences such as policymakers and academics, and the broader public;

  • Managing the process for the preparation and dissemination of speeches, including working with the Office of the Managing Director and others in COM to maximize the impact of speeches and other communications;
  • Preparing tailored messaging and content for different communication channels, such as digital channels;
  • Contributing within the Communications Department, to the formulation and implementation of the IMF’s communications strategy;
  • In discharging these tasks, the incumbent will be expected to maintain close contacts with other departments in the IMF, as needed, to ensure that country work and policy developments are fully reflected in the Managing Director’s external communications activities.


The selected candidate is required to have an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in communications, international relations, languages, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience, is required. Alternatively, a university degree, or equivalent, and ten (10) years of relevant professional experience are required.

Proven experience and first-class track record as a speechwriter, with a deep understanding of today’s evolving political and economic context as well as global economic and financial issues. Sensitivity to tailoring messaging and communications for different audiences and for different delivery channels. Superb communication skills are a must. Demonstrated ability to write in a cogent, non-technical, accessible, interesting, and accurate way about the broad range of issues of concern to the IMF, and thus to help the Managing Director and, as needed, other members of the IMF’s leadership team to convey her analysis, views, and ideas to influential audience groups and the wider public. A broad understanding of the strategic and policy issues of the IMF is essential, as is sensitivity to external context. Ability to negotiate effectively and be a team player, as well as openness to feedback and excellent interpersonal skills, are non-negotiable.

This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent’s performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
