Purpose of Job

The Analyst, ESD is responsible for contributing, as an Environment and Sustainability Department (ESD) team member the assessment of investments for their potential E&S risks and compliance with the E&S Policy and Access to Information Policy (AIP) requirements, with subsequent monitoring of Clients’ E&S performance. This role is critical in preventing occurrence of institutional liabilities of financial and reputational nature related to E&S impacts of Bank’s transactions, country and sector policies and broader initiatives. This position provides research support and technical input to the due diligence and monitoring of projects, which may include the review of project documentation, site visits, drafting of guidelines and contribution to Technical Co-operation assignments. The Analyst carries out these tasks as part of an ESD project team under the guidance of the project lead specialist or under the supervision/guidance of more senior ESD specialists.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the a more senior ESD specialist:

  • Work as an ESD project team member in the environmental due diligence of projects in line with the ESD Assurance processes to ensure that projects are structured to meet the E&S Policy Performance Requirements and in line with the E&S Procedures.
  • Carry out in-house social due diligence and subsequent monitoring activities across a broad range of sectors for low and low-medium risk projects.
  • Conduct due diligence and monitoring site visits; review project documents and advise on improvements to enhance the project outcome.
  • Provides analytical and administrative support to other ESD colleagues during the social due diligence and monitoring of projects.
  • Work with other specialists in the team in identifying potential social components in projects (e.g.,GET attribution or inclusion opportunities), and provide guidance to Banking on the development of sustainability activities (including additional investment and TCs) to strengthen the social impacts of projects.
  • Work with Banking on the assessment of climate and nature-related risks, in line with TCFD (and potentially TNFD) recommendations.
  • Provide input to sector and country strategies/policies, papers or other initiatives.
  • Assist with the designing, processing, implementation and monitoring of specific TC assignments or provide comments to the other teams’ TC work based on identified opportunities for broader Bank’s policy dialog and E&S benefits creation at project, sector or country levels.
  • Support the ESD in planning and organization of meetings
  • Provide background research to ESD specialists on various topics that inform projects and that are necessary for events and meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Knowledge and expertise of technical environmental issues in one or more of the following sectors: Financial Intermediaries; infrastructure; energy; agribusiness; manufacturing and services; TMT (telecommunications, media and technology); and property and tourism;
  • Knowledge of main EU and international E&S requirements, practices and guidelines (e.g. EU Social Taxonomy, World Bank’s EHS Guidelines, Equator Principles, Core ILO Conventions, etc.), as well as good international practice approaches to managing E&S risks (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO39001, ISO 26000, HAACP, SA 8000, etc.). Practical experience in the assessment and implementation of these topics is an advantage;
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following social topics: labour, , gender equality and gender based violence and harassment, human rights risk assessment; Practical experience in the assessment and implementation of these topics is an advantage;

  • Practical experience in the assessment of particular topics related to the Banks PRs such as: ESG, ecosystems services is an advantage;
  • Work experience gained in the environmental, health and safety and social appraisal of projects, including ESIA, auditing, management systems and stakeholder engagement is an advantage;
  • High-level English writing and verbal skills, and numeric, methodological and IT skills at the level corresponding for the role. Knowledge of French and/or Arabic is an advantage;
  • Effective time management and organisational skills and ability to multi-task without losing attention to detail;
  • Sound partnership skills to enable positive engagement with other internal and external partners;
  • Negotiation, persuasion and influence skills in internal and external engagement activities to deliver the team’s and Bank’s objectives, based on strong interpersonal and effective communication skills;
  • Results oriented;
  • Team player;
  • Ability to devise creative solutions to problem;
  • Qualitative and quantitative research skills and experience;
  • Experience in project management, implementation and monitoring;
  • Experience in working in and good understanding of the Bank’s countries of operations is an advantage
  • Applicable education degree or equivalent professional qualifications in relevant subjects.
